Time Management PDF Print E-mail

When you study is as important as where you do it. To test your knowledge of how to make your study time productive, answer the following questions and keep track of your answers:

Yes No Do you start your homework at the same time each day?

Yes No Do you have a written study schedule?

Yes No Do you allot time for review as well as homework?

Yes No Do you study your subjects in a defined order?

Yes No Do you study your hardest subject first or second?

Yes No Do you take short breaks between each subject?

Yes No Do you spend at least an hour a week on homework and review for each subject?

Yes No Do you study at least 5 days a week?

Yes No Do you schedule time for physical activities (sports or exercise) each day?

Yes No Do you allow definite "time off" from studying and homework?

 


SCORING THE QUIZ

Give yourself 1 point for every "yes" answer. If you scored:

  • 8 or more  - You've mastered the fine points of when to study. Just correct the areas you answered "No".
  • 5 to 7 - Your study scheduling habits are fair, but could be improved.
  • 4 or less - You've just discovered a real opportunity to improve your marks. Pay close attention to the material in this section.
 
Study Schedule DO's and DON'Ts PDF Print E-mail
  1. DO keep all your schedules in the same place and refer to them each day. Record information immediately.
  2. DO schedule in Blocks of Time. Study Blocks that range between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours are most effective.
  3. DO study for 5 or 6 days a week. That means scheduling time Monday to Thursday, plus one or two days on the weekend.
  4. Even if you have no homework in a subject, DO review your class notes for that subject.
  5. DO schedule time for physical exercise everyday.
  6. DO use any free time between classes, but DON'T schedule your lunch hours for homework or review.
  7. DO make sure that each day has some time that's unscheduled, when you can do as you please. Enjoy that time.
  8. DO be specific about what tasks you plan to do and when you plan to do them. (ie. Learn all parts of a cell vs study science)
  9. DO schedule enough time to get each task completed. Be realistic in your time requirement.
  10. DO say "NO" to your friends. Invitations from your friends shouldn't sway you to alter your study plans.
 
Advice for Test and Exams PDF Print E-mail
  1. Arrive early.
  2. Bring all materials with you. (Pens, pencils, erasers and calculator with extra batteries.)
  3. Listen carefully to your instructor's directions and comments. -Instructors frequently announce changes in the test or emphasize instructions you may overlook.
  4. Look over the whole test. Read the directions carefully and highlight words that tell you what to do.
  5. Read the whole test first marking off the questions for which you know the answers. Do these first.
  6. Budget time according to marks given per question and total time allotted.
  7. Write down key facts or formulas in the margins so you don't forget this key information.
  8. Answer easy questions first. This will help build confidence, trigger recall of other of other answers and the materials you studied and give you points immediately.
  9. If you don't know an answer make a mark next to the question and try to complete it later.
  10. Guess on answers you don't know. You may pick up part marks.
  11. Use all the time that is allowed. If you finish early, check your papers for errors - do they make sense. Check spelling, punctuation, grammar.
